The
Digital Camera Revolution By Kevin Sweeney
I
have been shooting underwater and topside
with conventional film camera systems for
over 30 years now. For the last 15 years I
have been using Nikonos cameras and some SLR
cameras in housings. I really enjoyed the
SLR cameras in housings because of the variety
of available lenses that work above and below
water. Nikonos camera systems work great too
but most lenses only work underwater. After
years of buying film and waiting for processing,
I have recently (going on 2 years now) made
the move into the digital era! I started with
the smaller digital cameras in housings but
found them limited with the lenses offered
by the manufacturer and very limited battery
life. The one big advantage to digital is
the number of shots available on a dive! No
longer am I limited with 36 exposures to a
dive and wondering if they turned out or not.
With digital you have as many shots as your
memory card can hold (some over 1000!) Today
I have graduated to the Digital SLR camera
system above and below water! With my Canon
SLR cameras I am able to great awesome photos
above and I have a housing to use the same
camera and lenses underwater! I get instant
viewing of my shots and with a one-gig memory
card I am able to take over 300 photos at
high resolution! Also I now use only rechargeable
batteries in my cameras and strobe systems
so I have no waste at all! Also, you can download
all your pictures on a laptop or home PC,
view them, delete the bad ones and play with
the good ones! Playing- meaning sending them
to friends over the internet, making slides
shows to view on your computer and printing
them at home! My results with my digital camera
systems are simply beyond belief. Stop by
the store and see our camera systems and photo
display or visit the photo gallery on this
site.
